Democrats in Massachusetts are well on their way to removing God from the oath of office.
At least 14 Democrats, mostly freshmen lawmakers, introduced a bill to amend the state constitution. Instead of saying “”so help me God” elected leaders would say “This I do under the pains and penalties of perjury.”
The measure has already been approved by a powerful legislative committee and Bay State atheists are overjoyed – downright giddy. They believed an oath to God violates the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
“We support any move that helps to increase the government’s commitment to secularism,” Zachary Bos, the state director for American Atheists, told The Meadville Tribune.
Republicans and Conservatives are a dumbfounded by the move — calling it a cynical attempt to erase the state’s rich legacy of faith.
“It’s yet another cynical attempt to erase the rich legacy of faith that has been part of our Commonwealth form the Pilgrims to today,” Massachusetts Family Institute president Andrew Beckwith told the newspaper.
It should be noted Congressional Democrats tried to pull a similar stunt earlier this year in Washington – but were unsuccessful. Divine intervention, perhaps?
“It is incredible, but not surprising, that the Democrats would try to remove God from committee proceedings in one of their first acts in the majority … They really have become the party of Karl Marx,” Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) told Fox News.
