The Boston Public Library recently had a blasphemous anti-Catholic group of drag queens called the Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence lead a story time for children as part of their celebration of Pride Month.

Photos of the event were posted on both the main Boston Public Library Facebook pageand the Facebook page for their Children’s Library.

The caption of the photo posted on the Children’s Library page reads: “Let’s end Pride Month with a drag… drag queen storytime, that is! Join us on Thursday, June 29th at 3:30 for another visit from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.”

The Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence calls itself a “modern Order of Nuns, comprising of people of all gender associations, all spiritual affiliations, and all proclivities to do good works,” and believes that “people should be encouraged to live their lives in any way that brings them the most amount of satisfaction and joy, without guilt or shame, so long as they do harm to no one.”

The Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a part of a worldwide organization called the Sisters of Indulgence, which was founded in San Francisco in 1979 on Easter Sunday. With the slogan “Go forth and sin some more!”, its website says it’s “a leading-edge Order of queer nuns” that is “devoted… to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.”

To join the group, there is year-long, four-step process with the steps named “Volunteer,” “Postulant,” “Novice Sister,” and finally “Fully Professed (Black Veil).” Those interested contact a “Mistress of Novices,” and if there is no chapter in your area, you can set up a “Missionary Order.”

The group is essentially an inverted mockery of Catholic religious life for the purpose of promoting sexual perversion. A few examples of how this is the case include: (1) the name is a take-off of Catholic names like “Sisters of Perpetual Adoration,” but is instead made about sin (“indulgence”); (2) the slogan inverts Christ’s words to the woman caught in adultery to “Go and sin no more” (John 8.11); (3) the terminology and iconography used by the group is all based on Catholic religious life, but is instead used for the promotion of sexual perversion; (4) the blasphemous group was founded in 1979 on Easter, the most important holy day of the liturgical calendar.

Many commenters on the Boston Library’s Facebook posts pointed out the anti-Catholic nature of the group.

“I find this mockery of my Catholic faith quite offensive. This is bald-faced bigotry and hatred and the library is allowing it. Disgraceful!” wrote one commenter.

“This is why I don’t bring my kids to the Library. It’s so inclusive unless it’s Catholics, then they can bash and shame. And yes, this [is] child abuse,” wrote another.

Pride Month is a month-long celebration of gay pride for the month of June, observed worldwide. President Bill Clinton was the first U.S. president to recognize the month in the last year of his presidency, and President Barack Obama recognized the month each year of his presidency.
