The Communist Manifesto, originally titled Manifesto of the Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei) is a short book written by the German Marxist political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
It has since been recognized as one of the world’s most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League’s purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism’s potential future forms.
The book laid out the communist league’s purposes and program. It suggested a course of action for a working class revolution to overthrow the bourgeois social order and to eventually bring about a classless and stateless society.
In the Communist Manifesto, Marx calls for the abolition of private property, the elimination of the family social unit, the overthrow of all existing governments, communal ownership of property, and the end of what he called “capitalism.”
Most importantly, The Communist Manifesto laid the foundation for the dangerous political ideology of Marxism, in which, once adopted by nation states, inevitably led to the deaths of over 100 million people.
