On Tuesday, so-called “Republican” Ohio Governor John Kasich vetoed pro-life legislation dubbed the “heartbeat bill,” striking a massive blow to the pro-life movement, which he claims to support.

“With the Heartbeat Bill folded into House Bill 493, Kasich used his line-item veto to single out and remove the abortion language since it was accompanied by a $100,000 appropriation to create the Joint Legislative Committee on Adoption Promotion,” reports The Columbus Dispatch.

Kasich did sign the other pro-life bill on his desk, which bans abortions after 20 weeks.

“I agree with Ohio Right to Life and other leading, pro-life advocates that SB 127 is the best, most legally sound and sustainable approach to protecting the sanctity of human life,” said the governor in a statement. He added that he will work “to strengthen Ohio’s protections for the sanctity of human life.”

As reported by The Daily Wire last week, the heartbeat bill would have banned abortions on babies with a beating heart, which can be detected as early as six weeks. The legislation also included an exception for the rare case of the mother’s life being in jeopardy.

The pro-life movement had reservations about the bill’s ultimate survival, but they were banking on Governor Kasich’s “immediate support,” since he claims to be a pro-life Republican.

“We look forward to passage of H.B. 493 with Heartbeat protection amendment in the Ohio House, and Governor Kasich’s immediate support,” said Paula Westwood, executive director of the Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati.

Westwood’s optimism was met with a veto from Kasich.
